Hard Disk Spin Rite V6 0 Full Xsx Rar Files
Hi,A short time ago I purchased a copy of SpinRite 6.0 to do periodicmaintenence on my hard drives (my OS is Win2K pro). It work well enough onmy main 'C' drive, BUT it does not recognize my 200 USB Maxtor 1 touchexternal hard drive which I use to back all my stuff. I was toldby the SpinRite Service Desk that if I could find a DOS driver and installit then SpinRite 6.0 might be able to find my USB drive. I was alsodirected to a couple of DOS drivers listed on the SpinRite FTP site. Here is the rub: I have not a clue on how to successfully merge a driverfrom the SpinRite's FTP site (or elsewhere) with the FreeDos boot diskcreated by Spinrite in MS Windows. Can anyone out there help me. If themerge is possible, I need some detailed info on how to do it.Regards,Chuck.

If the merge is possible, I need some detailed info on how to do it.It's actually not that difficult, though the result is agonizingly slow.Worse, I'm still not convinced that it works with NTFS volumes. (Anyone?)Spinrite is a dos program at it's heart, so you don't really need to 'merge'the driver in quite the way you seem to be thinking. The spinrite disk isbasically a (very) cut down copy of FreeDos wich boots and starts spinriteautomatically. You could boot dos and start it manually too - so a dos boot disk that canaccess USB drives would do; simply change disk and start spinrite from thesecond disk. (Or copy it across).I've got a disk image that worked quite well for me. I can let you have thatif you want it.
(Just add your copy of spinrite, write it to a floppy withsomething like winimage ( www.winimage.com ) and away you go. Hopefully. The pain is that not all USB controllers are made alike, so severaldifferent driver variants exist. The most reliable generally seems to be thepanasonic one that appears to cover the widest chipset.I also had a lot of success getting Spinrite to hook up to a USB driveinside VMware, if you have that available.
(And, they vmware.com will letyou have a trial version for free y'know). In fact, I would actuallyrecommend this method right now over the USB Dos drivers.
My test put it at28 times faster. The USB link is here if you need it:feel free to email me if you wish.Paul. My primary systems BIOS recognizes the external USB drive, though it addresses it only in USB 1.1. The drive is formatted in NTFS and SpinRite recognizes it without trouble and begins to do its thing on the drive. This is good to know. The drive I tested with was a dell drive with a smallFATpartition as well as the NTFS partition. For whatever reason, the USBdriver recognized the drive, but spinrite believed it only had this smallFAT partition. The rest of the drive (NTFS5) was nowhere to be seen. 'Begins' because I need to set it up to run for days even at Level 2 at USB 1.1 speeds - and I haven't done that yet.
(My other machines don't recognize USB in the BIOS, so I need to make up the driver disc.)And yes, I had this same issue. The drive benchmarked at around 500.Interestingly, under vmware with direct drive access in a USB 2.0 port, itranat about 14,000.
A factor 28 improvement isn't bad. And it saw all thepartitionscorrectly. The other bonus was that I could use the PC at the same time as lettingSpinriterun over the drive.
Clearly I couldn't use that particular drive, but apartfrom that, and a fairly loaded processor, I was good to go.Paul. My primary systems BIOS recognizes the external USB drive, though it addresses it only in USB 1.1. The drive is formatted in NTFS and SpinRite recognizes it without trouble and begins to do its thing on the drive.Actually I take back what I just said. You say your BIOS recognizes it?So that means you don't need DOS USB drivers to get spinrite to see thedisk? So I'm still not convinced that the DOS USB drivers (for those of us withmachines thatare not smart enough to recognize USB drives.) don't actually go with NTFSdrives?Hmm.Paul. Thanks very much for you comments and your time Allen, Paul and Mike.:- )FYI:First let me explain that my internal and external drive files are all ofthe NTFS type. I also USB 1.1 And 2.0 outlets on this machine. The short of it is that I was able to get SpinRite 6.0 to recognize and workwith my 200 gbt Maxtor USB 2.0 external hard drive. Here's how:I downloaded the Panasonic DOS drivers USBASPI.SYS and its companionDi1000dd.SYS (Info atthe Motto Hairu materials.)Then I installed them just as you instruct below.
(The SpinRite 6.0config.sys file on the disk is hidden and write protected. So I had to makeit visible and writeable).
Once that was done my boot disk file systemlooked like this:SPINRITE.EXECONFIG.SYSDI1000DD.SYSKERNEL.SYSSRSPLASH.SYSUsbaspi.sysAnd the Config.Sys file now looks like this:device=USBASPI.SYSdevice=Di1000dd.SYSDEVICE=SRSPLASH.SYSSHELL=SPINRITE.EXEI unpluged my drive from the USB hub and plugged it into a 2.0 USBconnection on my machine. Then I booted. Amazingly, it worked. The DOS drivers loaded and Spinritewas able to seemy Maxtor Drive. Unfortunately, for reasons I do not understand (maybesomeone can tell me),I could not get the DOS USB drivers to locate the Maxtor and complete theboot in the 2.0 outlet again.I was obliged to use a 1.1 USB outlet after the first run in order to get acomplete startup of SpinRite inDOS.As one of you guys mentioned the USB in DOS connection is slow beyondbelief: Spinrite estimated that using the NO 2 'fast' check configuration onthe 200 gbyt Maxtor external drive it would take 59 hours and 40 minutes torun to completion. The number 4 configuration estimate was over 200 hours.Maybe one of the other solutions proposed would be faster?? No one knows, not even Steve. A wild guess would be 'sometime next year'.;)I have to admit, this would probably be the far more reliable solution.Inside VMware seems to work, and quite well - I've recovered at least onedrive this way - but the fact that the drive is still accessible insidewindows is a little bit freaky. Spinrite sort of assumes it's in a realmachine, and has exclusive access to the drive. I can't imagine how confusedit could be if the contents of the drive change while it's looking at it.Noo. I don't think I'll do that.On the other hand, the virtual machine route also looks at the issue of themachine being locked up working on a drive, potentially for days. At least Ican do other things at the same time and let the drive repair go on in thebackground.Just got to remember not to let the antivirus kick in:-)Paul.
